This anthology series based on the work of ex-cop turned author Joseph Wambaugh became the archetype for many critically acclaimed shows that followed, including HILL STREET BLUES, NYPD BLUE, and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS. With no regular cast, the show's rotating acting ensemble included James Farentino, Tony Lo Bianco, Don Meredith, Ed Asner, Laraine Stephens, Vic Morrow and Glenn Corbett. The series distinguished itself from its predecessors by its multidimensional portrayal of its protagonists; these cops were flawed, not cartoon-like heroes. Its gripping episodes took on difficult issues like police corruption and the stresses that can come with a cop's life. A 1976 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Drama Series, POLICE STORY also received two Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Show (Drama).
